Interactive prototype

Click through it the way a buyer meets it.

Built from the shipping components, with a real chart computed for a sample child. Tap inside the phone, or jump to any step.

The chart is computed on the Swiss Ephemeris through Cosmic Cub’s own natal API. The reading text is from the sample reading.

The brief

Astrology software is built for astrologers.

Most charts arrive as a wheel of glyphs & a table of degrees. The people who want one most are in the middle of a change: expecting, newly a parent, turning thirty, leaving something. They want to know what it means for them, today.

Cosmic Cub had to read like a letter written for one person & still hold every degree an astrologer would check. So every number is computed on the Swiss Ephemeris, & every number has plain words beside it.

What the data changed

From motherhood to every phase of life.

I launched for mothers & their babies. Then the first product strangers bought on their own was the adult print. In September I repositioned the whole product around that signal.

A research sprint across Etsy search, competitors & our own orders came first. Then 155 copy edits in a week, an adult reading that knows the reader’s age & life cycles, & a home page that names phases of life instead of an audience.

Interaction

Two patterns I designed & built in code.

  • The orbitA front door that moves once, then holds still

The home page opens on eight photographs of the phases a reading honors, passing through depth on one ellipse. I wrote it as a single decay equation: the speed starts high & approaches a slow drift without ever arriving, so there is no seam where an intro hands off to a loop.

  • One pill, three statesget the reading → the writing → open the reading

The chart page has one call to action, & it never moves. It sells the reading, then becomes the progress while the reading is written, then becomes the door into it.

The system

Four color families. One typeface. Large is light, small is bold.

I wrote the design system as one document that Figma & the code both answer to. Anything not in it is not in the system.

Tap a color to copy it.

The weight rule

the moment they were born

Eleven Eleven Light 300 · display

Planets & placements

Eleven Eleven Bold 700 · 11px · +0.24em

The scale runs opposite to convention. Large type is Light, small type is Bold uppercase, & nothing sits in the middle. It is the single most recognizable thing about the typography.

Interpretation

Fourteen years of astrology, built into a system.

Every reading is shaped by an interpretation framework I built from fourteen years of studying astrology. Technology carries it to each reader. The judgment in it is mine.

  • A framework, not a template

Each chapter is defined by the placements, aspects & patterns it reads, & by how they weigh against each other.

  • Written for the reader

The same chart reads differently for a little cub, a mother, a father or an adult, so each reading type has its own designed set of chapters.

  • Timing & life cycles

Adult readings account for the reader’s age & the slow cycles they are moving through.

  • A voice with rules

Generic phrasing is banned outright, & every reading is checked against my voice rules before it ships.

  • Show the working

Every chapter opens on the placements it’s built from, so it can be checked against the chart.

Shipping

Designed in Figma, built in code.

I built Cosmic Cub myself, with Claude Code as my pair, & I ship in small iterations from live feedback. One thirty-day stretch from August into September carried the white redesign, a security lockdown & a single checkout route.

From Figma to print

I designed the chart in Figma, then built the generator that draws it.

The wheel started as a design in Figma. I rebuilt it in code as the chart generator that powers every chart in the app & every 16×20 print, recolored for each product: blue in the app; sage, pink & neutral for little cubs; white & black for adults. When an order comes in, the chart is drawn, a proof lands in my inbox, & the print goes to production once I approve it.
